Had you asked me this question 5 years ago I would have simply said ‘A retelling of a story’. Pretty boring right? However after spending the last 5 years interviewing people for a living my answer has changed drastically. Now I know, there are stories…. And then there are SOUL stories.
Stories are simply a retelling of an event such as ‘The cat jumped over the mat.’
But a soul story? Now that’s where the juiciness comes in. You see in a soul story, the cat didn’t just jump over the mat. No that cat had aspirations and ambitions to be the best jumper in the world and even though his gimpy leg would prove a challenge and he constantly doubted himself, nothing would hold him back from accomplishing his dreams of jumping over that mat… even if it meant failing 100 times before he got that one perfect jump.
A soul story is more than just a retelling of events. It’s a retelling of the thought and emotions and circumstances that led up to that event, the good, the bad, the ugly and everything in between. A soul story stirs something deep within and when retold creates a ripple of inspiration out into the world.
I’ve spent the last 5 years collecting stories as a videographer (and more recently as host of the #courage1000project) and the stories that were told from the soul, now those stories would make the hairs on my arms stand on end, they would make tears swell in the corner of my eyes and my heart race along with theirs.
Yes, had you asked me 5 years ago my answer would have been very different. But now I know without a doubt, a soul story….
